Carabid Morphology and Thermotolerance

Check if the same lab product or an alternative is used in the 5 most similar protocols
Following determination of cold tolerance traits, carabid size was subsequently determined by measuring the distance between the labrum and the posterior end of the elytra (Roger et al., 2012 ). Measurements were made using a camera (Zeiss AxioCam ERc5s® HD) mounted on an ×9 binocular microscope. Photographs were taken using Intelcam software and morphological measurements made using the image processing software Image J® (v. 1.48). Size was determined for a total of 948 carabids over the 2‐year sampling period and the effect of size on carabid thermotolerance was investigated using this subset. The size of B. quadrimaculatum was not determined due to a lack of individuals when performing the size calculations.

Measuring Insect Body Size via Tibial Length

Check if the same lab product or an alternative is used in the 5 most similar protocols
The hind tibia of parasitoids and of the corresponding aphid mummy (which gives a measure of the host size at the moment of its death) were measured using a camera (Zeiss AxioCam ERc5s® HD) mounted on an x9 binocular microscope. Photographs were taken using Intelcam software and morphological measurements made using the image processing software Image J® software (v. 1.48). Tibia length was chosen since it is a commonly used indicator of body size in insects and correlates strongly to other measures such as dry mass (Godfray1994; Cohen et al., 2005) .

About PubCompare

Our mission is to provide scientists with the largest repository of trustworthy protocols and intelligent analytical tools, thereby offering them extensive information to design robust protocols aimed at minimizing the risk of failures.

We believe that the most crucial aspect is to grant scientists access to a wide range of reliable sources and new useful tools that surpass human capabilities.

However, we trust in allowing scientists to determine how to construct their own protocols based on this information, as they are the experts in their field.
