3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (3-APTES), and tetramethoxysilane (TEOS,
98%) were purchased from Beijing J&K Scientific Co., Ltd. d-Glucose (C6H12O6·H2O, analytical reagent), sodium borohydride (NaBH4, ≥98.0%), and silver nitrate (AgNO3, ≥99.8%,
analytical reagent) were purchased from Tianjin Fuchen Chemical Reagent
Technologies Co. Ltd. Tetrachloroauric(III) acid trihydrate (HAuCl4·3H2O, 99.95 wt %, Au > 47.8%, ACS reagent)
was purchased from Beijing Warwick Chemical Co., Ltd. Hexadecyltrimethylammonium
bromide (CTAB, ≥97%) was purchased from Shanghai Accela ChemBio
Co., Ltd. All reagents were used as received. Borosilicate glass slides
(24 × 24 × 0.15 mm3) were acquired from Citotest
Labware Manufacturing Co., Ltd. The refractive index of borosilicate
crown glass slides is ca. 1.52 (from the refractive index website).37 All aqueous solutions were prepared by using
deionized water (Millipore, 18.2 MΩ·cm).

Cyclodextrin-Assisted Enzyme Immobilization

γ-CD, CD, starch, source, maltose, d-glucose, and l-glucose were purchased from J & K Scientific Ltd. (Beijing,
China). The recombinant enzyme CGTase (GenBank accession no. X15752.1) was
overexpressed and purified as previously described by our group (Figure S1).32 (link) Cell
counting kit-8 was obtained from Dojindo Laboratories (Dojindo, Japan).
Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) detection kit was bought from Jiancheng
Bioengineering Institute (Nanjing, China). High-performance liquid
chromatography (HPLC)-grade acetonitrile was purchased from Merck
KGaA (Darmstadt, Germany). Water was prepared with a Milli-Q plus
Ultrapure Water System (Millipore, Billerica, MA). Other reagents
and chemicals were purchased from Sigma-Aldrich and J & K.

Screening Diverse Sugar Compounds

The 12 tested sugars (epi-inositol, D-arabinose, D-raffinose, D-galactose, myo-inositol, D-maltose, D-glucose, D-sucrose, D-fructose, D-mannose, D-trehalose, and D-cellobiose) were all purchased from J&K scientific (purity ≥ 96%), Beijing, China. Stock solutions (1 M) were prepared using ND96 buffer (100 mM NaCl, 2 mM KCl, 1.8 mM CaCl2, 1 mM MgCl2, 5 mM HEPES, pH 7.6). Prior to experiments, the stock solutions were diluted into ND96 buffer to obtain the testing concentrations. All compounds were freshly prepared for the experiments.
