8-MOP were purchased from Japharm (Nanjing, China). 8-MOP tincture (1 mg mL−1 8-MOP in ethanol–water) was purchased from Huapont Pharm (Chongqing, China). Isopropyl myristate, Cremophor EL35, and Cremophor RH40 were purchased from BASF (Ludwigshafen, Germany). Ethyl oleate, oleic acid, oleoyl macrogolglycerides (Labrafil M 1944 CS), and medium-chain triglycerides were obtained from Gattefossé (France). Polyoxyethylene stearate (Solutol) and polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG400) were purchased from Sinopharm Chemical Reagent (Shanghai, China). Cabomer-940 was purchased from Shin-Etsu Chemical Japan. Lactate chitosan (LC), carboxymethyl chitosan (CC), acetic chitosan (AC), and hydroxypropyl chitosan (HC) were purchased from Sinopharm Chemical Reagent (Shanghai, China). 4,8,5′-Trimethylpsoralen (TMP) was purchased from Tauto Biotech (Shanghai, China). High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)-grade methanol and acetonitrile were obtained from Tedia (Fairfield, OH, USA). Double-distilled water was used throughout the study. All other chemical reagents and solvents were of analytical grade.

Birch Triterpene Extract Formulation Study

Triterpene extract from the outer bark of birch, TE, was obtained from Birken GmbH, Niefern-Öschelbronn, Germany (Table 1). Sunflower oil (Henry Lamotte Oils GmbH, Bremen, Germany) medium-chain triglycerides, MCT (Miglyol 812; Sasol Germany GmbH; Hamburg, Germany), and light liquid paraffin (Hansen & Rosenthal, Hamburg, Germany) as well as octyldodecanol (BASF, Ludwigshafen, Germany), peanut oil (Caelo, Hilden, Germany), castor oil (Caelo, Hilden, Germany), almond oil (Caelo, Hilden, Germany), jojoba oil (Gustav Hees, Stuttgart, Germany), isopropylmyristate (BASF, Ludwigshafen, Germany) were used as oil phases. Water was obtained by reverse osmosis (Purelab Option-Q 7/15; Elga Berkenfeld GmbH, Celle, Germany). HPMC, was obtained from Harke Service GmbH (Mühlheim an der Ruhr, Germany). Ethylcellulose was obtained from Dow Chemicals (Schwalbach, Germany)
Release studies were conducted with modified Franz diffusion cells (volume of 12 mL; orifice of 2 cm2 Gauer Glas, Püttlingen, Germany) and track-etch polycarbonate membranes 0.4 μm (Whatman, Dassel, Germany).
