The Sm-promoted catalysts were prepared by the co-precipitation method. A solution containing iron(iii ) nitrate nonahydrate (>99.99 wt% Shanghai Macklin Biochemical Co., Ltd), manganese nitrate (50 wt% Shanghai Macklin Biochemical Co., Ltd) and samarium(iii ) nitrate hexahydrate (>99.99 wt% Shanghai 3A Chemical Co., Ltd) with the desired ratio was precipitated by anhydrous sodium carbonate (>99.99 wt% Shanghai Macklin Biochemical Co., Ltd) at 65 °C. The pH value of the solution was kept at 8.0 ± 0.3. Then, the solution was stirred for 0.5 h and aged for 1 h. After washing, filtration and drying, the precipitate was treated at 550 °C for 3 h. The FeMnSm catalysts were prepared by the above methods. The molar compositions of the catalysts were 100Fe/10Mn/xSm (x = 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2), which were labeled as Sm0, Sm0.5, Sm1, Sm1.5 and Sm2, respectively.

Flash-frozen fresh lotus seeds were obtained from Green Acres Food Co., ltd. (Fujian, China). Coomassie brilliant blue protein reagent was obtained from Beijing Solarbio Technology Co., ltd., 95 % ethanol was obtained from Xilong Scientific Co., ltd., phenol, ethyl ether, and concentrated sulfuric acid were obtained from Sinopharm Group Chemical Reagent Co., ltd., Folin-Ciocalteu, anhydrous sodium carbonate, and catechol were obtained from Shanghai Macklin Biochemical Technology Co., ltd., AAPH (2, 2′-azobis(2-amidinopropane)dihydrochloride) was obtained from Qiaoyi Biotechnology (Shanghai) Co., Trolox (6-hydroxy-2, 5, 7, 8-tetramethylchroman-2-carboxylic acid) was obtained from Aldrich Chemical Co., TPTZ, and sodium fluorescein was purchased from Sigma Chemical Co. All other chemicals used were of analytical grade.

Chitosan (deacetylation degree ≥95%, viscosity from 100 to 200 mpa.s.), sodium-hydroxide, chlorosulfonic acid, lithium bromide, glycidyl methacrylate, acetic acid and anhydrous ethanol were obtained from Aladdin (Wuhan, China). Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits were obtained from 4A Biotech (Beijing, China). Streptozotocin was obtained from Sigma Aldrich (Burlington, MA, USA). Citric acid was purchased from Solarbio (Beijing, China). Sodium citrate was supplied by YuanYe Biotech (Shanghai, China). A hematoxylin and eosin dying kit was purchased from Beyotime (Shanghai, China), and Masson’s Trichrome dying kit was purchased from Solabio (Beijing, China), dying according to the procedure in the instructions.
