Fabrication of Analytical μPADs

Whatman filter paper No. 1 was purchased from Whatman International Ltd. (Maidstone, England) and then used for μPADs fabrication. Yellow oily double-sided adhesive tape (brand Youbisheng, width = 40 mm) was purchased from Shengneng Packaging Co., Ltd. (Hangzhou, China). The tape was composed of a double-sided adhesive layer and a protective film. The marker (nib diameter = 0.7 mm), which was used to draw the pattern on the filter paper, was purchased from Shenzhen Shengjie Stationery Wholesale Collection Co., Ltd. Ni(NO3)2,·6H2O, toluene, Cu(NO3)2, Co(NO3)2·6H2O, KNO3, Na2SO4, Ca(NO3)2, Mg(NO3)2, Zn(NO3)2·6H2O, Pb(NO3)2, Fe(NO3)3, CH3COONa, NaF, NaNO2 and MgSO4 of analytical grade were bought from Sinopharm Chemical Reagent Co., Ltd. (China). Mn(NO3)2 was bought from Aladdin Reagent Company (Shanghai, China). Tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane was bought from Macklin Biochemical Co., Ltd. (Shanghai, China). The natural mineral water was purchased from Emeishan Yuquan Water Industry Co., Ltd.

Sediment Sample Preparation for Aquatic Research

KCl, NaH2PO4, Na2HPO4, CH3COONa (NaAc), and KNO3 were above analytical grade and purchased from Sinopharm Chemical Reagent Co., Ltd, China. The sediment samples were collected from a fishpond located in Gong’an, Hubei province, China (112°15′44.63″E, 29°55′14.62″N). About 5 kg of sediment was collected at 0.2 m below the surface of the pond using a UWITEC Sediment corer 60 (Mondsee, Austria) on April 12, 2014, and transported to the laboratory at 4°C. Then, the sediment was washed with 1 mol/L KCl solution to decrease the ammonia concentration to below 0.5 mg/L, washed with 1 mol/L phosphate-buffered saline (PBS, pH = 7.0) to remove potassium ions, and centrifuged at 6000 g for 10 min.

Synthesis of Manganese-Doped Silica Nanoparticles

The raw materials for synthesizing MS nanoparticles were listed as follows: calcium chloride anhydrous (CaCl2), ammonium fluoride (NH4F), tetraethoxysilane (TEOS), cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), and sodium acetate anhydrous (CH3COONa) were purchased from Sinopharm Chemical Reagent Co. Ltd. (Shanghai, China). Manganese chloride tetrahydrate (MnCl2·4H2O) was purchased from Sigma-Aldrich Co. Ltd. (USA). MS nanoparticles were synthesized according to a previous study (36 ). Briefly, 3 g of NH4F and 1.8 g of CTAB were added in 500 ml of deionized water separately. Then, the mixed solution was continuously stirred at 80°C until it became homogenous. Subsequently, 9 ml of TEOS was slowly added into the above solution and aged for 12 hours. After being centrifuged at 8000 rpm for 15 min, silica nanospheres were obtained from the precipitate and washed with ethanol and deionized water. Next, 0.1 g of silica nanospheres, 0.05 g of CH3COONa, and 0.1 g of MnCl2·4H2O were added in 40 ml of deionized water, respectively, and triethanolamine was added into the above mixture until the pH was 7.5. Then, the mixed solution reacted at 110°C for 24 hours in an enclosed autoclave. After the solution cooled, the obtained precipitate was washed with water and anhydrous ethanol. Last, the obtained products were calcined at 650°C for 6 hours.

Sodium Bentonite Purification and Characterization
