A Nafion-117 cation exchange membrane for separating catholyte and anolyte was manufactured by Du Pont de Nemours & Co., Ltd. (Wilmington, DE, USA). A potentiostat providing direct current (DC) power was purchased from Shanghai Chenhua Science Technology Corp., Ltd., Shanghai, China. Unless otherwise specified, all chemical reagents were acquired from commercial suppliers and utilized without further purification. Sodium persulfate (PS, ≥99.5%), carbamazepine, norfloxacin, atrazine, phonel, methanol (99%), bisphenol A (BPA), sodium hydroxide (NaOH), atrazine, sulfuric acid (H2SO4), sodium sulfate (Na2SO4, ≥99.0%), Diammonium 2,2′-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonate) (ABTS), potassium titanium (IV) oxalate, tert-butanol (TBA, 99%), and boron-doped diamond electrode (BDD) electrodes (800 ppm boron, bipolar, 1 mm coating thickness) were obtained from J&K Chemical (Beijing, China). Activated carbon fiber (ACF) electrodes and platinum-plated titanium electrodes (25 mm × 50 mm × 1 mm) were obtained from Shanxi Kaida Chemical Ltd., Lvliang, China. DC power supply was obtained from Zhejiang Sako Electrical Group Co., Ltd., Leqing, China.

Celecoxib Pharmacokinetic Evaluation

Celecoxib was purchased from Perfermker (Shanghai, China); genistein and carbamazepine (IS) were purchased from J&K Chemical (Beijing, China); and carboxy methylcellulose sodium salt (CMC), acetonitrile (ACN), formic acid, and other MS-using chemicals were purchased from Sigma-Aldrich Company (Shanghai, China). The primary standard stock solution of celecoxib (1 mg/ml) and IS (500 ng/ml) used in in vitro experiments were prepared by dissolving in methanol. Celecoxib and genistein used in the in vivo experiment were dissolved by 5% CMC.
The male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats (240 ± 30 g) were purchased from Shanghai Laboratory Animal Center (SLAC). Before starting experiments, they were raised for three weeks in laboratory to minimize the influence of transportation process.

Adsorption of Pharmaceuticals using Biochar and Activated Carbon

Coconut, pinenut and walnut shells were obtained from a local market in Beijing. Coal powder and coconut based granular activated carbon were purchased from Zhengzhou Yedao Environmental Protection Co. (China). The biochar and activated carbon were all crushed and sieved into the particle size of about 150-200 mesh (75-100 μm). Iron powder (Fe), ferric oxide (α-Fe2O3) and magnetite (Fe3O4) were purchased from Sinopharm Chemical Reagent Co., and milled for 2 hours before use. The two typical pharmaceuticals including carbamazepine (CBZ, purity = 97%, water solubility = 121 mg/L; pKa1 = 2.3, pKa2 = 13.9; MW = 236) and tetracycline (TC, purity = 98%, water solubility = 170 mg/L; pKa1 = 3.3, pKa2= 7.7, pKa3 = 9.7 and p Ka4=12; MW = 444), were purchased from J & K Scientific Co. (Beijing, China). Other chemicals including potassium permanganate (KMnO4) and quartz sand (SiO2) were obtained from Beijing chemical Works. All solvents (methanol, acetic acid, hydrochloric acid, acetonitrile and formic acid) used in this study were HPLC grade (J. T. Baker Inc., USA). All chemical solutions were prepared in ultrapure water produced by a Milli-Q system (Millipore, USA).
