The materials included ferric nitrate—nonahydrate (Fe(NO3)3⋅9H2O, 98%, SD Fine Chem. LTD), sodium hydroxide pellets (97%, ACROS Organics), glacial acetic acid (98%, CARLO ERBA chemicals), acetyl acetone (98%, LOBA Chemie), formaldehyde (37%, ROTH) and nitrogen-doped titanium dioxide (Company, China). Methanol (99.8%), titanium dioxide (99%), sodium chloride (98.5%), hydrochloric acid (37%), ammonium acetate (99.99%), potassium borohydride (98%) and polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP, 55.000 g/mol) were supplied from Sigma-Aldrich.

STAT3 Silencing Using siRNA

Agarose, Quant-iTTM RiboGreen® RNA Reagent and Kit, SYBR Safe DNA gel stain, UltraPureTM TBE Buffer, 10X and UltraPureTM DNase/RNase-Free Distilled Water were provided by Invitrogen (Thermo Fischer Sci., Carlsbad, CA, USA). Methanol (HPLC grade MeOH), ≥99.8% was provided by Fischer Scientific (Thermo Fischer Sci., Loughborough, UK). Sodium chloride (NaCl) for the analysis was obtained from Applichem GmbH (Darmstadt, Germany). 4-Methylphtalalic anhydride 96%, phosphoric acid, extra pure, 85 wt% solution in water, sodium hydroxide pellets, 98.5%, were purchased from Acros Organics (Geel, Belgium). Hydrochloric acid fuming ≥ 37% (HCl), HEPES (N-[2-Hydroxyethyl)piperazine-N’-[2-ethanesulfonic acid]) sodium salt, poly(ethylene glycol) average Mn 6000 (PEG), Trizma® hydrochloride (TRIS HCl) and Tween 20 were obtained from Sigma Aldrich (St-Louis, MO, USA).

Quantification of Carboxylic Acids in Kraft Black Liquor

Calibration of the high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) system for carboxylic acid quantification was carried out with formic acid (98–100%) from Chem-Lab (Zedelgem, Belgium) and acetic acid, glycolic acid and sodium lactate (all >99%) from Sigma-Aldrich (St. Louis, MO, USA). The acid model solution for the ED experiment was prepared with formic acid (98–100%) from Chem-Lab, L-lactic acid (90%) from Roth (Karlsruhe, Germany) and glycolic acid (99%) and acetic acid (99.8%) from Sigma-Aldrich. Sodium hydroxide pellets (98%) for pH adjustment were purchased from Thermo-Fisher Scientific (Waltham, MA, USA).
The pretreated kraft BL was supplied by a local pulp mill. Twelve different wood species were processed by the mill, amongst which were beech, birch, acacia and oak. The liquor composition and sample characteristics are summarized in Table 1. Besides the components listed in Table 1, BL also contains inorganic pulping chemicals and salts such as sodium, sulphur compounds and carbonate as well as organic compounds such as other carboxylic acids, hemicelluloses and extractives that were not quantified.

(80% AR), and sodium chloride (NaCl) (99.5% AR/ACS) were purchased
from LOBA Chemicals Pvt Ltd. Sulfuric acid (H2SO4) (98% purity) and hydrochloric acid (HCl) (35% purity) were obtained
from Merck Life Sciences Pvt. Ltd. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) of 30% (w/w) (98% purity) is obtained from Thermo
Fischer Scientific India Pvt Ltd. All reagents were used as received.
Deionized (DI) water was used in all the aqueous solutions and for
all the laboratory experiments.
