Antibacterial Chitosan-based Semi-IPN Hydrogels

Check if the same lab product or an alternative is used in the 5 most similar protocols
In order to obtain semi-IPN hydrogels with antibacterial properties, three types of chitosan were used: commercial chitosan (CC, Sigma-Aldrich St Louis, MO, USA, ≥75% deacetylation degree, Mn = 2.056 × 105 g/mol), chitosan synthesized in previous works from commercial chitin via a deacetylation process (CCH, 77% deacetylation degree, Mn = 4.7291 × 105 g/mol [52 (link)]) and mineral-enriched chitosan extracted in previous works from shrimp shells (SHC, 76% deacetylation degree, Mn = 9.058 × 103 g/mol, crystallinity 59.42% on (020) plane [52 (link)]). Vinyl benzyl trimethylammonium chloride (Sigma-Aldrich, 99%, VBTAC) was used as a monomer to generate quaternary ammonium pendant groups. The synthesis of semi-IPN hydrogels was performed following the initiation process with 4,4′-azobis-4-cyanovaleric acid (Sigma-Aldrich ≥ 98%, ACVA) in the presence of N,N′-methylenebisacrylamide (Sigma Aldrich ≥ 98%, MBA) as a crosslinking agent. The listed compounds were used without any purification. Acetic acid (Sigma-Aldrich, 99%) and pure demineralized water were also used to solubilize chitosan.

Functional Organosilanic Monomers for Film Preparation

Check if the same lab product or an alternative is used in the 5 most similar protocols
For films preparation, the functional organosilanic monomers [3-(2-trimethoxysilyl) propylmethacrylate (MAPTES, 98%, Sigma Aldrich) and trimethoxysilane (MPTES, 98%, Sigma Aldrich)], ammonium hydroxide -catalyst (NH4OH, 25 %, ChimReactiv), Ethanol (EtOH, 99.6%, Fisher Scientific), hydrochloric acid (HCl, 99.6%, Fisher Scientific) and distilled water were used as such. The lipopolysaccharide template from Pseudomonas Aeruginosa 10 (LPS with 500,000 endotoxin units/mg, Sigma-Aldrich) was used in the form of lyophilized powder (as received).
For microparticles prepration, kaolin (K, ACROS Organics), vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS, 99%, Fluka), vinylbenzyl trimethylammonium chloride (VBTAC, 98%, Sigma Aldrich), 2,2′-Azobis (2methylpropionitrile) (AIBN, 98%, Sigma Aldrich) radical initiator, ethanol (EtOH, 99.6%, Fisher Scientific), isopropanol (S.C. Reagents COM S.R.L) and dimethylforamide (DMF, 99.8%, Sigma-Aldrich) were used as such without any further purification.

About PubCompare

Our mission is to provide scientists with the largest repository of trustworthy protocols and intelligent analytical tools, thereby offering them extensive information to design robust protocols aimed at minimizing the risk of failures.

We believe that the most crucial aspect is to grant scientists access to a wide range of reliable sources and new useful tools that surpass human capabilities.

However, we trust in allowing scientists to determine how to construct their own protocols based on this information, as they are the experts in their field.
