Body Composition Analysis in Mice

Check if the same lab product or an alternative is used in the 5 most similar protocols
No more than 12 hours before sacrifice, eight mice from each experimental group were subjected to body composition analysis to determine absolute fat and lean tissue mass by magnetic resonance imaging (EchoMRI 3-in-1, Echo Medical Systems, Houston, TX). Two or three measurements were taken per mouse to ensure instrument precision, and values for individual mice were averaged for statistical analyses.

Longitudinal Body Composition Analysis

Check if the same lab product or an alternative is used in the 5 most similar protocols
At time 0, body composition of awake mice was determined by NMR in an EchoMRI 3-in-1™ (Echo Medical Systems, Houston, TX). Body composition measurements were repeated weekly for 15 weeks (16 measurements) for Muscle-DN mice or for 7 weeks (8 measurements) for MSTN KO mice while fed different diets. For some animals, 1-2 weeks of body composition (but not food intake) measurements were lost due to down time on the instrument. Additional animals were added for 3-5 weeks spanning the lost time points so that all time points had body composition and food intake measurements from at least 5 animals with the exception of weeks 14 and 15 when one Muscle-DN mouse developed malocclusion on HF diet.

Intermittent Cold Exposure in Mice

Check if the same lab product or an alternative is used in the 5 most similar protocols
Following a 4-week acclimatization period, the mice were ranked by weight and distributed into three groups (8 mice/group) of equal mean body weight. On days of cold exposure (Monday, Wednesday, Friday), body weight and food intake were measured and cages were transferred to a 4°C room for the indicated number of hours (intermittent cold exposure: ICE). Control mice were similarly moved to a new room at 22°C for 1 hour (ICE#1) or 4 hours (ICE#2). Body composition (fat mass and fat-free mass) was measured by time domain Echo MRI 3-in-1 (Echo Medical Systems, Houston, TX) every 2 weeks in early morning.

Longitudinal Body Composition Measurements

Check if the same lab product or an alternative is used in the 5 most similar protocols
Body weight and food intake were measured weekly. Body composition was measured by placing the mice inside the Echo MRI chamber for 45–60 seconds (Echo MRI 3-in-1, Echo Medical Systems). Percent body fat was measured 2, 6, 10 and 17 weeks after switching the mice to a HFD or LFD.

Metabolic Profiling of C57BL/6J Mice

Check if the same lab product or an alternative is used in the 5 most similar protocols
Wild type C57BL/6J male mice were purchased from and kept in the laboratory animal facility of Chongqing Medical University. Mice were housed in a specific-pathogen free facility with a 12-hour light/12-hour dark cycle and were allowed unlimited access to sterilized chow and water. All animal care and experimental procedures were reviewed and approved by the Animal Care and Use Committee at Chongqing Medical University and all methods were performed in accordance with the relevant guidelines and regulations.
The mice body weight were monitored weekly and whole body fat mass were assessed right before the final end point (experimental week 28) using the quantitative nuclear magnetic resonance technique (Echo, MRI 3-in-1, Echo Medical Systems, Houston, TX). Blood leukocyte count was analyzed using the automated cytometry analyzer XE5000 (Sysmex Corporation, Shanghai, China). Serum total cholesterol levels were analyzed using a biochemical autoanalyzer (Roche, Miras, Switzerland).

Quantitative Body Composition Analysis

Check if the same lab product or an alternative is used in the 5 most similar protocols
Body composition, including lean and fat mass, was assessed using an EchoMRI 3-in-1 quantitative nuclear magnetic resonance (qNMR) system (Echo Medical Systems, Houston, TX). This test is performed in conscious mice that are immobilized for one minute.

Weight was recorded weekly for 12 weeks (W0 to W12) and every day during bacterial exposure. Body composition was measured using the EchoMRI 3-in-1 instrument (Echo Medical Systems, Houston, TX, USA) at W0, W6, and W12 before bacterial exposure. Mesenteric fat pads were weighed post-mortem.

Quantitative Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Lean and Fat Body Mass in Mice

Check if the same lab product or an alternative is used in the 5 most similar protocols
Lean and fat body mass was measured in live mice by quantitative magnetic resonance imaging on an EchoMRI 3-in-1 instrument (Echo Medical Systems, Houston, TX). Fat body mass measurements were calibrated against canola oil standards.

Comprehensive Body Composition Analysis

Body composition (fat mass, fat-free mass, total water, and free water) was assessed in conscious mice using an Echo-MRI 3-in-1 (Echo Medical Systems LLC, Houston, TX). Mice were restrained in a custom restraint tube and placed in the MRI for a maximum of 60–80 s. Liver triglyceride content was measured using a colorimetric assay (Cayman Chemical). Serum concentrations of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST) were determined enzymatically by IDEXX BioAnalytics using the AU680 Chemistry System (Beckerman Coulter).

About PubCompare

Our mission is to provide scientists with the largest repository of trustworthy protocols and intelligent analytical tools, thereby offering them extensive information to design robust protocols aimed at minimizing the risk of failures.

We believe that the most crucial aspect is to grant scientists access to a wide range of reliable sources and new useful tools that surpass human capabilities.

However, we trust in allowing scientists to determine how to construct their own protocols based on this information, as they are the experts in their field.
