Blood test analysis was conducted through colorimetric enzymatic methods to estimate Triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), High Density Lipoproteins- Cholesterol (HDL-C), and Low-Density Lipoproteins-Cholesterol (LDL-C) using for PREFREC study the automated chemistry equipment Beckman CX7²⁴ (link) and for ENSPA study the automated chemistry equipment Coulter DXC800/600. High concentration of blood lipids included TC ≥ 200 mg/dL or having a current anti-cholesterol medication, TG ≥ 150 mg/dL, LDL-C ≥ 130 mg/dL and low concentrations of HDL-C < 50 mg/dL for women and < 40 mg/dL for men.^{13 ,14} (link)

Participants were classified as having diabetes according to a self-report medical diagnosis or fasting blood glucose levels (FBG) ≥ 126 mg/dL or a level of hemoglobin A1c (HbA1C) ≥ 6·5%, and/or current diabetes medication treatment. Prediabetes was defined as FBG ≥ 100 mg/dL and <126 mg/dL or HbA1C ≥5·7% and <6·5%.²⁹ (link) For assessing glucose levels, colorimetric enzymatic method was used in automated chemistry equipment Beckman CX7²⁴ (link) and Coulter DXC800/600 for PREFREC and ENSPA, respectively. For the HbA1c, a High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) technique was performed using the D-10 System.
