Recombinant
Bacillus anthracis PA
83 and LF
N were produced as described in refs. [49 (
link), 50 ]. D512K and K245G-R252N bicomponent octameric variant of PA was produced as described in ref. [51 (
link)]. PA
63 was prepared from PA
83 using furin [52 (
link)] or purchased from List Biological Laboratories, Inc. (Campbell, CA, USA) in the purified form. The following chemical reagents were used:
KCl, MES, KOH,
HCl (Sigma-Aldrich, St. Louis, MO, USA), “purum” hexadecane (Fluka, Buchs, Switzerland), pentane (Burdick and Jackson, Muskegon, MI), and agarose (Bethesda Research Laboratory, Gaithersburg, MD). 1,2-Diphytanoyl-
sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DPhPC), 1,2-diphytanoyl-
sn-glycero-3-phospho-L-serine (DPhPS), 1, 2-dioleoyl-
sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DOPC), 1,2-dioleoyl-
sn-glycero-3-phospho-L-serine (DOPS), 1,2-dioleoyl-
sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine (DOPE), bis (monooleoylglycero)phosphate (S,R isomer) (DOBMP), 1,2-diphytanoyl-
sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine (DPhPE),
1,2-dioleoyl-3-trimethylammonium-propane (DOTAP), and bis(monomyristoylglycero)phosphate (S,R isomer) (DMBMP) lipids were purchased from Avanti Polar Lipids, Inc., Alabaster, AL, USA (all in chloroform). Per-6-(3-aminopropylthio)-β-cyclodextrin (AmPrβCD) was a kind gift of Dr. Vladimir Karginov, KFBio, LLC (Ashburn, VA, USA). Milli-Q water (EMD Millipore, Billerica, MA, USA) was used to prepare solutions.
