As described previously^{24 (link)}, whole pancreas H&E-stained sections were examined by a trained morphologist blinded to the sample. Briefly, all pancreatic parenchymal area was imaged using the PathScan Enabler IV slide scanner (Meyer Instruments, Huston, TX) and images were evaluated for acinar necrosis. Necrotic area and total acinar area were measured in pixels for each pancreas. Percentage necrosis was reported as a percentage of total area for each pancreas.
