At 24 hours post injury, blood was collected via cardiac puncture, an aliquot was placed into a microcapillary tube, and read for a complete blood count with differential by Hemavet (Drew Scientific, Dallas, TX). The remaining blood was harvested for serum by centrifugation after clotting. Serum aliquots were used to measure IL-6 by ELISA (BD Biosciences, Franklin Lakes, NJ) or liver transaminase levels using a DRI-CHEM 7000 (HESKA, Loveland, CO) as described previously (13 (link)).
