Albumin and creatinine levels in the urine of mice were measured as previously described [19 (link),20 (link)]. Mice were placed in individual metabolic cages for 12 h to collect urine samples after 24 weeks of STZ-induced hyperglycaemia. Albuminuria was determined using a mouse albumin enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit (Bethyl Laboratories) according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Urinary creatinine was determined using the Cobasc501 module assay from Roche Diagnostics [14 (link)].
