To determine cell number, cells were washed with PBS and dissociated by trypsin. Cells were then resuspended with DMEM containing 10% FBS and cell number was measured using a cell counter (Millipore, Billerica, MA, USA). Cell number counted by a Scepter cell counter was based on Coulter principle of impedance-based particle detection [54 (link)]. Cells ranging in diameter between 10 to 22 μm were counted as surviving cells [55 (link)].
