Dietary Variability and Marine Contribution

To understand the dietary variability across age and sex and to estimate the marine contribution to the diet, which potentially influences the ⁸⁷Sr/⁸⁶Sr results, 25 inhumed individuals’ ribs were analysed for δ¹³C and δ¹⁵N. Collagen was extracted from the samples following the protocol of ¹⁴CHRONO Centre (QUB)⁵⁰. The C:N_a ratio (ratio of carbon to nitrogen atoms) was determined on the same collagen by elemental analysis on the EA-IRMS^{51 (link)}. All extracts that contained C:N_a ratios outside a range of 2.9–3.6 were not included since their isotopic composition may have been compromised by diagenetic alteration^{52 (link),53 (link)}.
