Synthesis and Characterization of Ionic Liquid Monomers

All chemical reagents, except for ionic liquid imidazolium cations, were purchased from Wako Pure Chemical Industries, Ltd. (Wako) (Tokyo, Japan) and Tokyo Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. (TCI) (Tokyo, Japan). 2,2′-Azobis(isobutyronitrile) (AIBN, Wako) was purified by recrystallization from ethanol before use, and the other reagents were employed as received. MAImC₁ and [{CH₂=C(CH₃)COO(CH₂)₂}C₃H₃N₂(C₈H₁₇)]⁺ (MAImC₈) were prepared as iodide salt (MAImC₁-I) and bromide salt (MAImC₈-Br), respectively, according to the procedures described below.
