- Fever and/or respiratory symptoms of duration < 14 days
- Presentation of children < 18 years old
- Children who resided in the study catchment area (9 counties in Middle Tennessee)
- Children who were not previously enrolled for the same episode of ARI in the past week
- Newborns who were never discharged
- Children with fever and neutropenia or a known nonrespiratory cause of symptoms
- Children who were hospitalized for > 48 h
