Anticoagulation of blood obtained by puncture of the retro-orbital plexus was performed with 0.1 volume of 136 mmol/L trisodium citrate. Subsequently, plasma was immediately isolated by centrifugation at 1100 × g for 10 min and stored at −20 °C [64 (link),67 (link),68 (link)].
Plasma cholesterol and lipoprotein cholesterol levels were determined using a Cholesterol Quantification kit from Sigma-Aldrich (Sigma, St. Louis, MO, USA). HDL and non-HDL lipoproteins were separated by ultracentrifugation as described [69 (link)]. Plasma triglyceride concentration was quantified using the Triglyceride Quantification kit MAK266 (Sigma, St. Louis, MO, USA) according to the instructions of the manufacturer.
