RNeasy and DNeasy kits (Qiagen, Germantown, MD, USA) were used, according to the manufacturer’s protocol, to extract the total RNA and DNA from the midfrontal gyrus of the brains of HIV[−] and HIV[+] patients, as previously described [46 (link)]. Using the same technique, total RNA and DNA were extracted from the parietal cortex, striatum and cerebellum of SIV-infected macaques, as previously described [47 (link),48 (link)].
