C57BL/6J (WT) mice were purchased from The Jackson Laboratory. Mice deficient in the type I IFN receptor (CD118-/-) (29 (link)) or HSV glycoprotein B (gB)T-I.1 TCR transgenic mice (30 (link)) on a WT background were maintained at Dean McGee Eye Institute. Animal treatment was consistent with the National Institutes of Health Guidelines on the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. All procedures were approved by the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center and Dean A. McGee Eye Institute Institutional Animal and Care Use Committee. HSV-1 (strain McKrae) was grown and maintained as previously described (31 (link)).
