Different markers of neutrophil activation were quantified in the plasma sample obtained before surgery, following the strategy addressed in previous studies [51 (link),52 (link),53 (link),54 (link),55 (link),56 (link),62 (link)] and following manufacturer´s instructions. These markers were: cfDNA (Quant-iT PicoGreen dsDNA kit, Life Technologies, Eugene, OR, USA) and nucleosomes (Cell Death Detection ELISAPLUS kit, Roche, Mannheim, Germany) as markers of the neutrophil nuclear content released upon NETosis; calprotectin (Human Calprotectin ELISA kit, Hycult Biotech, Uden, The Netherlands) as marker of cytoplasmic content; and MPO (Human MPO ELISA kit, Abnova, Taoyuan, Taiwan) as marker of granules content, both released upon neutrophil activation by different mechanisms.
