All solvents were of analytical grade and were used without further purification. Reagents were purchased from Sigma-Aldrich. 2,2′-bipyridine (bpy) and 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (dip) were purchased from Sigma-Aldrich. The following complexes [Ru(dip)₂(bpy)]Cl₂,[Ru(dip)₂(bpy-SC)]Cl₂ and [Ru(bpy)₂bpy-NitroIm]Cl₂ were prepared according to the published procedures [42 (link),43 (link),44 (link)]. The purity and identity were confirmed by HPLC by comparison to published results as well as ¹H NMR or HRMS analysis (data available in Supplementary Materials).
