After overnight fasting, diabetes mellitus was induced in animals with a single intraperitoneal injection (i.p.) of streptozotocin (STZ) at 55 mg/kg prepared in a 0.01M citrate buffer of 4.5 pH [21 (link)]. On the third day after STZ injection, a drop of blood was drawn from the tail vein of each rat, and the blood glucose levels were estimated using a glucometer (ACCUCHECK Active Glucose Monitor, Roche, Germany). Rats with blood glucose levels of ≥250 mg/dL were considered diabetic and underwent surgical wounding.
